René Jacquet - Francillon ( 1937 - March 8th, 2018 ) was a French writer and journalist, expert in aviation. Born in Italy, he has grown up in Provence ( southeastern part of France ) and witnessed the arial ballet involving American fighters during Operation Dragoon ( August - September 1944 ). His passion probably came from this time. René Jacquet - Francillon obtained a Doctorate in economics and was graduated from the University of Lausanne ( Switzerland ) in air transport economy. He then emigrated to the United States in 1961.
He worked as a consultant for several aircraft manufacturers. He participated as an engineer at Douglas in the CX - HLS giant aircraft cargo programme.
René Jacquet - Francillon has published his first article about aviation in Belgium ( 1958 ). He then became a contributing writer for the French magazine " Le Fana de l'Aviation ". He was the author of many books about aviation, such as B - 52 Pilots ( 1991 ), From the Comet to the A380 : History of jetliners ( 2005 ) and Mustang, the North American P - 51 ( 2014 ). He also wrote articles over American aircrafts in magazines throughout both Europe and the United States.
